A Distant Land: Poem by Ohikhuare Isuku

Someday, we will write about this place:
About the warm hospitality,
About the warmth of silence:
Clean streets and stately homes,
Evergreen flowers: ixora hedges shaped
Like slender graves;
Christmas trees entwined by strings of
Disco lights which smiled to dilute the night.....

Someday, in our books, in our poems
And in our warm discussions,
We will talk about
The frangipani and the bougainvillea,
The sun rising over Cactus Lane,
Birds twittering in the milky sky,
The Ocean waves raging towards the shore -
Collapsing like mats unfurled...
And we will speak about
The happiness and laughter,
We so much felt in a distant land.
