Modern Churches in Nigeria and so many other developing
nations have become so well-coordinated in commercial affairs that sometimes
I marvel at the intricacies of their organizational charts. So many churches
are springing from the dust every new moon; no! on daily basis. Surprisingly, these
bodies have veered totally from their spiritual mission. Instead, they have
embraced the financial gains so tightly that sometimes, it seems impossible to
distinguish between money and modern churches. There are the multiple offerings
per service; endless donations towards ‘the on-going church development’;
lunches as well as extravagant bazaars.
Of a truth, I hold no grudge against the leaders of these
thriving ventures, neither do I harbour any envious feeling towards them. At
least, these ‘men of God’ have found for themselves a gainful occupation, and
to a fair extent employ few other Nigerians. In addition, (to the very least),
these modern churches have had both psychological and philosophical
significance on their flocks, through make-believe miracles and prophesies; although
true effects are felt from leaders so well groomed in the fields of philosophy
and psychology.
My one and sincere request is that, as these robust bodies
keep feeding fat, they should be taxed appropriately by FIRS and SIRS.
